To the 2025 graduating class: Congratulations! You’ve passed the tests, attended the school assemblies, prom, homecoming, played the sports, ate cafeteria food, performed the musicals and plays, woke up early, stayed up late, worked incredibly hard to get where you are at today, all to answer the question, “so, what are your plans after high school?”
This question can feel incredibly daunting, right? It’s as if you have to have your entire life figured out. I think people mean well and ask out of sincerity. But it doesn’t take away the fear that can come with thinking about plans for the future. Do you remember what it was like facing fear as a child?
My wife and I have 3 kids, with two on the way. That’s right, I said two! Our oldest is currently 5, then 3 and 2. When you have a young family, your kids can tend to feel afraid of experiences that maybe don’t deserve that much fear. Things like going into their room by themselves when it is dark; they’d rather have me come with them and turn the light on for them. Or when we are at church and they see a group of familiar faces and they want to say hi; they ask, “Dad, will you come with me?”
There’s something about the presence of a parent or trusted adult that gives a child great confidence and peace in their circumstances. Just as my presence for my kids gives them peace as we tackle turning the light on or talking to people at church, there is a greater promise in Jesus that has to do with His presence.
From the beginning of the Gospels when He was born,
Matthew 1:23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).
To the commissioning of the disciples to build God’s Kingdom,
Matthew 28:20, “And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
There is a consistent promise that is part of the identity of Jesus Christ that He is a God who is with us.
So, even more than the confidence in which you can answer the question, “what are your plans after high school?” There is a greater promise that you can be confident in. No matter what you do, Christ will be with you.
Whatever your path—college, work, trade school, a gap year, or even underwater basket weaving—the most important thing is this: Christ will be with you every step of the way.
